Cleft Palate

Cleft palate is a developmental defect which occurs in 1 out of 20 patients worldwide, the cause still being uncertain. The defect can be diagnosed at 5-6 months of intrauterine life. It is a birth defect and often is in combination with cleft lip(harelip). The cleft palate is corrected by a highly specialised surgery by which the hole between the mouth and nose is closed. The closure is meticulous with reconstruction of speech muscles as well as uvula.
The surgery is usually carried out at the age of 12 - 18 months. The operation lasts for about 3 hours and is carried out under magnification.
The patients start oral liquids from the next day of the operation. They are discharged ffrom the hospital on 7th day after surgery. For more info visit my website

My Latest Work

I operated a girl with inability to open the mouth since childhood. This was due to the fusion at het right temoro-mandibular joint , i.e. at the joint which lies in front of the ear and moves everytime we move our jaw. The girl now of 18 years of age had amazingly managaed to mentain good nutrition by almost liquid diet and also had sueeded in keeping the teeth healthy despite difficulty in brushing.
We managed to give anasthesia to the girl by using a fibreoptic device to visualise the wind pipe in the throat. we then reached the joint as shown in the photograph, and released the fused joint. The adjacent muscle part(seen in the pic above the white cotton cloth) was put in the gap created to avoid repeat of the fusion process. The girl for the first time in her life opened her mouth after she regained her consciousness. She ate a few idlis on the next morning. and is happily smiling. Her lower jaw hasnt grown fully and needs second surgery for cosmetic correction which is planned after 6 months.

winners

Winners have dreams; Losers have schemes.
Winners see the gains; Losers see the pain.
Winners see the potential; Losers see the past.
Winners make it happen; Losers let it happen.
Winners see possibilities; Losers see problems.
Winners makes commitments; Losers makes promises.

Winners are a part of the team; Losers are apart from the team.
Winner always has a programme; Loser always has an excuse.
Winner says "Let me do it for you"; Loser says "That is not my job".
Winners say "I must do something"; Losers say "Something must be done".
Winner is always a part of the answer; Loser is always a part of the problem.
Winner sees an answer for every problem; Loser sees a problem for every answer.
Winners believe in win/win; Loser believe for them to win, someone has to lose.
Winner says "It may be difficult but it is possible"; Loser says "It may be possible but it is too difficult".
Winner makes a mistake. he says "I was wrong"; Loser makes a mistake, he says "It wasn't my fault".
